Louisiana's Roll of Honor - Civil War

Here are the names of Louisiana military members with names starting with the letter "A" who died in the U.S. Civil War, also called the War of the Rebellion, the War for Southern Independence, the Second American Revolution and the War Between the States, 1861-1865. Some scholars include the period from the Harpers Ferry Raid in 1859 and the Reconstruction, 1865-1877, to the time line. This list is based on archival, public and private lists that in some case vary in terms of numbers of soldiers, names and dates of loss. The major sources on Louisiana Confederate losses is "Military: Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands," in three volumes, compiled by Andrew B. Booth, Commissioner Louisiana Military Records, and published by the state of Louisiana in 1920.

Given the circumstances, it is amazing that any records exist of Confederate dead. Civil Wars up to, and largely since, the U.S. Civil War have ended with the soldiers on the losing side being strung up to die on the roadside as a warning to all not to oppose the government. So when it became clear the South would lose, and once in fact it did capitulate, soldiers gathered records to burn in the streets, particularly in the wild region west of the Mississippi. The records of the dead as well as the living were consumed in the flames.

So it is safe to assume that only a fraction of the true records survived. How large a fraction survived only time, scholarship and serendipity will reveal. But the volume shown here suggest that a large number of soldiers died in the war.

And these are just the records of those known to have died. For each soldier shown as dead, two or three were reported as deserting, some several times, many never appearing in the records again. Many of those reported missing likely died, their bodies never found.

If any conflict shows the folly of war, despite the necessity of it at times, it was this.

Ranks and grades may vary among sources as many soldiers were ranked and/or promoted informally or through election and in some cases may have been promoted posthumously. Spellings and abbreviations are peculiar to General Booth's compilation. Updates and corrections emailed to John Andrew Prime at john@japrime.com will be incorporated into the listing as appropriate.
